Are you someone who wants to blog, but does not really dare? Who crawls behind the computer, but does not get a letter on the screen? Because you think it is not good after all. Or do you not even crawl behind your computer and hide behind excuses that you don’t have time or that no one is waiting for your story?
Then read on. Because fear of writing is not necessary for anything and can be easily overcome.
Especially when it comes to writing a blog. Because anyone can do that. And everyone should also do it. At least if you want more customers.
I, therefore, give you 10 tips to get rid of that unnecessary and business-hindering fear.
1 – Make sure you already have a topic
Sounds obvious, but it isn’t. Many entrepreneurs I have spoken to are crawling behind their computers without knowing exactly what they want to write about. That doesn’t really help. If you first have to think about what you want to say at all, it will be very difficult to say it.
It makes a huge difference if you have already determined your subject in advance. Then you no longer have to invest time and energy and you can immediately focus on the implementation. What you may have even collected some ideas about – even if unconsciously.
2 – First determine the purpose of your blog
You make it even easier to write down the purpose of your blog in advance. For example:
- I want to explain to the reader what to look for when running in the heat
- I want to explain to the reader why it is good to go to bed earlier
- I want to tell the reader what the benefits of a lymph drainage massage are
- I want to explain to the reader how to get rid of his fear of writing
All you have to do now is write down everything that contributes to that goal. What information does the reader need for this?
The great thing: you can, because you know it. Because it is your field.
It also prevents you from blogging about all kinds of other things that have nothing to do with this purpose and that your blog becomes confused and incoherent.
3 – Choose a list
The easiest way to create a blog is to make a list. It immediately gives structure to your blog and is also easy for the reader to read.
But especially the writing process becomes a lot easier.
It works like this:
Before you start writing, consider the benefits of a lymphatic massage or what to look for when running in the heat. Write them down one by one. For example, first on a scrap paper.
How many do you have? Four? Great, then the title of your blog will be 4 benefits of lymph drainage massage. Still, invented one? Then it becomes 5 advantages. You decide.
Now you just have to briefly explain those four (or five) points, put a catchy introduction above it, a short closing and your blog is ready.
Really, it’s that simple.
4 – Don’t wait until you’re in the mood
The biggest misunderstanding is that you have to be in a certain mood to be able to write. Nonsense. I think it works like that with certain novelists, but we are writing a business blog here, not a novel or poem.
In fact, I’m sure if you sit around waiting for that mood to never get in the mood. You already have a certain writing fear, so it will always push your writing mood away.
Also, remember that you get in the right mood by writing. Precisely by writing down the first words you automatically get into a rhythm and it becomes easier and easier. You turn on your mood as if you crank up such an old classic car. Just warm up and there you go! See also the next point.
5 – Just start
As said, writing is a matter of doing. You automatically activate your writing brain when you type the first sentences. So don’t stare at a blank screen for too long, but start typing quickly.
Especially if you work from a list, this is really not difficult. Start by writing down the first point you want to treat (benefit 1 of that lymph drainage massage). You have already determined this on your scrap paper, so you can type it down now.
Nice: your first sentence is already on the screen.
You should also know why that benefit is an advantage. Explain as if you were explaining it to a passerby.
Bam: first paragraph (s) ready.
So don’t start with the introduction. You can pop them up later when you are warmed up with those advantages/tips/ways that you can easily scoop up because this is your expertise.
6 – Choose your brightest moment of the day
While writing is a matter of time and you shouldn’t wait until you are in the right mood, there are times when you are brighter than other moments. Many writers have it in the morning, right after they wake up or right after they have breakfast (and a cup of coffee!). But there are also those who revive at night.
What is your clearest writing moment? Then make sure that you schedule such a part of the day in your planning. Block two hours and you will see how far you have come.
7 – Force yourself with deadlines
If no one is waiting for your blog, it is tempting to make it the closing item on your agenda. I can relate. I have literally spent years writing about writing my first blog for Blogkracht (seriously). Customers always came first so they got their blogs while my own blogs were left.
Until I decided to impose a deadline in the form of a weekly blog mail. I promised to send the reader a new blog every Tuesday and since then I have been blogging every week (or sometimes rewriting an old blog).
Now you don’t have to blog from me every week (once a month is more than enough ), but why not just send out a mailing every month at a fixed time? Nice for your customer, nice for the tire, but above all very good for the pressure on the kettle.
(No, no one is going to ask you where that blog goes if you don’t send an email on the agreed day, but the tacit agreement you feel already works wonders)
8 – Remember: content is more important than form
People read your blog because you provide information or inspiration. Not because you write so smoothly (ok, that can be taken into account, but without content, it is not enough). That is important to realize.
As long as your message gets across in your blog (I’ll teach you in a day ), you’re good. So focus on the content of your blog and make sure it is excellent. Then the readers will come automatically. Even if you write a crooked sentence once.
9 – Arrange a reader
If you are unsure whether your content comes across well, or if you want to make sure that your blog has no language or typing errors, just arrange a reader. That does not have to be a blog expert (may, I would like to do it for you ), but it can also just be a colleague, your partner, or that language-sensitive girlfriend.
Ask them to take a critical look and be open to their feedback. If they eventually find your blog understandable enough, there is also a barrier for you to publish it.
But especially before you start writing, it is a nice feeling that your blog will first go to a reliable reader.
10 – Nothing is certain
The nice thing about blogging is that your text does not go to the printer, but simply to a place on the internet. And that means that nothing is fixed, even once you have published it. Do you change your mind, do you not like a certain sentence or do you still see a typo that your reader has overlooked. No problem: open your WordPress page and edit.
Of course, I understand that it is not nice if readers see that error earlier and perhaps point it out to you. But that’s an ego thing you just have to step over. Everyone sometimes makes a mistake and I sometimes get comments about a typing error.
I am only grateful to the person because it just makes my blog better. And that’s what it’s all about.
